Canon Powershot SD 990 IS digital camera is a curvy beauty with good features packed in this small compact camera. Canon has done pretty good with this camera but for some minor issues. There is an optical view finder along with the LCD screen.

Features

  • 14.7 Megapixels
  • Timer with Face detection
  • 3.7x Optical Zoom
  • Image stabilization
  • Intelligent scene selector
  • 2.5 inches LCD screen
  • DIGIC 4 Image processor improves Face Detection

Camera Build

There are a few quirks in the camera build. First of all the on/off button. It is too hard to press and the location is not appropriate. Canon could have done little bit more design R&D on this part. The body seems little flimsy. Feels like it might break open any time. The battery and the memory card latch comes open easily in your bag or pocket.

But, other than those minor things, everything else in the build is absolute perfect. Even though the outer shell seems flimsy, it is strong. The curves and the finish are good to look at as well as feel good in hands. It has nice weight to it and feels comfortable in hand.

Features

It has pretty good preset modes and also manual mode. The best is the “Quik Shot” mode. It will take pictures pretty fast. But, you cannot use it with LCD screen. You need to use the view finder for this mode.

One other good feature is the face recognition feature for timed shutter release. You can choose this mode, press the shutter button and go in front of the camera. It will recognize an new face has come and then will fire. This is very helpful for self portraits. This feature won’t work that well in bright sun light.

There is full manual mode for exposure and focus, like an SLR camera. These features can be helpful when you want more control on your shots and the preset modes are not helpful for you situations.

Quality of Photos

The images are very sharp. Indoors, Outdoors and everywhere the images normally come out to be very good with vivid colors. The colors are more natural with SD990 than some of the other cameras in this range. On ISO 250 and above in low light conditions, you could see some graininess in the images. Shutter lag is slow and therefore this is not suitable with fast action shots. But, this is the same with most of the compact cameras.

All in all a good buy.
